Sometimes, it doesn't make sense, but it's just cool anyway.
As far as the sexist exploitation of Marilyn Monroe, and women in general, Alex, you're really old fashioned on this.
That was LAST decade, where us men were supposed to feel guilty and beat ourselves up for allowing this to happen to women.
If you will walk into any Borders, Walden books, etc., and scan the magazine section, almost every magazine has all the top actresses in their underwear, or topless holding their arm across their boobs, etc.
I'm sure there's not a guy holding a gun to their heads, in fact, many of the photographers are women.
In other words, it's the new melennium, it's cool to use your sex appeal to increase your fame, so for the time being, us men are off the hook, because THIS time, it's THIER idea to exloit themselves, which is somehow completely different.
Of course, when all these chicks jiggle their way to the top, and make really big, and want to be taken very very seriously, they will go back to blaming me.
the same way Sharon Stone said she had no idea they were going to do that beaver shot in Basic Instinct (which made her a star overnight).
Later, she claimed not only did she know, but it was HER idea!
So it's always convenient to blame men when for their slutty behavior, then AFTER they're worth say ten or twenty million, they claim personal empowerment.
So I'm surprised you can't see through all this, it's so obvious.

Everytime I get into this argument with my girlfreinds militant feminist freinds, I always ask the following question:

"Why is it that if, for example, an intelligent, educated woman chooses to be a stripper, gets up on a table and takes her clothes off while gyrating to Motley Crue, and men shove dollar bills in her garter, you'd say she is taking control of her own life, and call her a feminist.

But, if any woman, educated or not, invites all the men in the neighborhood over to her house, gets up on her kitchen table, and takes all her clothes off while gyrating to Motley Crue, and NOBODY gives her a DIME for it, you'd call her a slut, or worse?"

I've never figured out how women can rationalize that double standard.

I think the ideal woman has only existed in books - my ideal is Dagny Taggart who featured in Ayn Rand's superb novel, "Atlas Shrugged". Although feminists would not agree - they believe in the supremacy of the female group rather than a self sufficient, independent, uncompromising, sexual, monogamous woman.

Then we better create a plan to protect our standing in this great society. Such threat is undemocratic, Un-America and Un-Godly. We should mobilize and organize our leaders, media and the military inorder to defend against such threat. Wait at minute.... We have been for the past thousands of years... forget it! I don't care if Marilyn Monroe knew what she was doing, or had it all planned out, or later on in her life would write a tell all book....saying "boo hoo, I was forced to walk the skank".

My point is her glorification above and beyond any woman of real substance is criminal.

You all may be making valid points, points Marilyn would even be proud to call her own...but that doesn't change the conflagration that Marilyn is at the Top of the Heap as far as who is the most famous woman from the last half-century.

You guys are completely in the right there. I used to work for Vivid Video, one of the biggest Porno companies in the U.S. (doing Mail order and computer accounts crap, I'm afraid, nothing creative). Christy Canyon and other porn actresses like Savannah used to come in quite frequently to pick up checks and talk to Steve Hirsch, the prez. None of them had guns to their heads or were coerced in any way. When they wanted to quit, they quit (like Heather Hunter or Jennifer Wells). When our office manager asked Christy why she got into porn, she said, without hesitation, "because I like to f--k."

Are we feminists?
If feminism was about anything that it was thirty years ago I might have called myself one. However in this time its moral ideals of equality have been replaced, by groups like N.O.W., with simplistic man bashing.
Many groups that take up a cause will eventually go this route once they have accomplished their original goal. Rather than going on to right the many wrongs in other lands many modern day feminists seem more intrerested in rewriting the definitions of what constitutes a sexist act as to maintain the status of victimhood, than in correcting the many real examples of violations occuring in the world. Many would call it rape if a woman decides later that she regreted having slept with a man thus compleately insulting the women who actually underwent such horrors. Groups who are in danger of having to admit they are no longer are helping anyone may resort to out and out lies to keep on surviving. Like claiming that one in four emergency room visits by a woman is from domestic abuse, or that wives are beaten more on superbowl Sunday than any other day. I heard and believed these stats for a long time before finding out they were fabrications. Unfortunately feminism like so many other "isms" has been rendered a pathetic shell of its former ideals and I for one, love seeing people suceed where the organizations that perport to take on thier causes continue to fail trying to prove thay are still needed.
